Heart of the Pines Chorus is an extraordinary group of women who gather together in celebration of the art form known as barbershop music. We are a chapter of Sweet Adelines International.
Kay Awtrey is a charter member of Heart of the Pines Chorus, having joined July 2011. She has been assistant director for two years and became the director of the chorus in April 2023.
Kay began as a baritone in the Heart of the Pines but later switched to lead. She was the baritone section leader then became the lead section leader. She is also in the Brick Street Harmony quartet where she sings lead.
Kay grew up in Oklahoma and also lived in Hawaii for 7 years. She and husband, Ken, have lived in Nacogdoches since 1992. She started college at Oklahoma State University, took a break to raise her family then graduated from Stephen F. Austin University after locating to Nacogdoches. She and Ken have been married for 50 years and have two sons and three amazing grandchildren. Kay also enjoys quilting and reading.
